Candlelight Dinners

Our Mid-Year Dinner was re-named our Candleight Dinner by Alan Farmer when he was Functions Coordinator in about 2010.
It is a special evening where we have a two-course dinner under candlelight, usually with some entertainment, raffles and prizes. it is one of our two more formal Club functions.
Royal Brighton Yacht Club 2025
We held the annual Beaumaris Probus Candlelight Dinner at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club. 85 members and their wives or partners braved the cold and windy conditions to attend what was a very successful night.
The two course meal was expertly served by the excellent Royal Brighton staff, which most people enjoyed, along with the pre dinner drinks and the wine provided on each table.
We were entertained by the glorious voice of Beth George and the improvisation of our accomplished keyboard player, Steve Sedergreen. Many jazz and blues standards were sung, including Cheek to Cheek, Summer Time and Autumn Leaves. The date coincided with the 106th anniversary of the birth of our long timemember, Ralph Butcher. Also, the 65th wedding anniversary of Barry and Margaret Amond, which occurred the following day, was celebrated. A raffle took place at the end of the night, drawn by our President’s wife, Lisa Hill, with prizes being won by Andrew Kerr, Margaret Smethurst and Chris Renwick. Tim Harding then thanked everyone for attending, mentioning his father’s membership of RBYC, thanking the organisers and promoting future events.
Thanks to all who assisted particularly John Green, Bob Wigg and Deb Skuse for welcoming guests and directing them to their allocated tables at the commencement of the night.
The night was marked by a dramatic event when a large elm collapsed over the Brighton Esplanade, just north of the Club, which halted traffic for some time and was still being removed from the road by the SES at the conclusion of the night. – Derek Skuse
Sandy By the Bay 2024

Victoria Golf Club 2023
The Candlelight dinner was a great night – ninetytwo of us were entertained by Jennifer Salisbury with songs from Gershwin and Porter plus somemade famous by Edith Piaf, with Mark Morand accompanying her on guitar. Added to that was great service, food, wine and the special ambience of Victoria Golf Club, secret plate prizes, and the usual raffle. Our heartfelt thanks to the impeccable organisation of Geoff Bransbury and Kevin Reed.
Sandy by the Bay - 2022
This Year our Candlelight Dinner was unique. We were treated to a truly memorable performance from two Ukranian artists.
Given the events in Ukraine , we thought it appropriate to find some musical from Ukraine. This was not an easy task. Ukranian singers in Melbourne are few and far between. We contacted the Ukranian Association and they put us in touch with Lucy Nicholson (nee Jurkiv) and Gary Wasenko. Lucy is now a performing arts teacher in Frankston but once sang with the Victiorian Opera. Gary runs his own business. They knew each other from childhood but no longer perform. It was also Lucy’s 60th birthday.
The event was held at Sandy by the Bay. 100 members attended. The food was excellent and the night proved one of our best ever. Kevin and Rhonda Reed organised a terrific raffle, and Ken and Margie Beadle presented Lucy and Gary with flowers and a bottle of gin!
However…It was nearly a disaster and Geoff Bransbury was in a spin. The Council car park was full of potholes. It was wet, dark and cold. Everybody arrived 30 minutes early and the bar wasn’t open. (We even hired lighting to minimise risk) The microphone and video wouldn’t work! However it all worked out in the end and hopefully eveybody went home happy.
Special thanks to Kevin Reed and Leon Laragy for helping out in the car park helping members navigate the potholes
