A Brief Profile of Peter Fitzgerald

Peter & Prue Fitzgerald

Peter Jonathan Fitzgerald has spent a lifetime learning, leading, and building meaningful connections through work, community, and family. Born at Brighton Community Hospital and raised in the bayside suburb of Black Rock, Peter’s story is one of steady achievement, curiosity, and commitment to doing things well.

He began his education at Brighton Grammar, where he developed an early love of learning and leadership, followed by studies in Economics at the University of New England. Those years shaped his understanding of how organisations and economies work — and, just as importantly, how people make them thrive.

Peter began his career with Mobil Oil, joining as a trainee soon after university. Over the years, he, worked his way through various management roles in Australia, building a reputation as a thoughtful, dependable leader who valued both people and performance. His journey eventually took him overseas to Fairfax, Virginia, where he joined Mobil’s International Division. Working in a global setting broadened his perspective and gave him a deep appreciation for different ways of thinking, leading, and solving problems.

After many fulfilling years with Mobil, Peter decided to bring his experience back home to Australia. He co-founded and became a principal and shareholder in a management consulting organisation, helping businesses navigate change and growth. Over a decade, the firm developed a strong reputation, and when it was eventually sold, Peter moved on with a sense of pride in the team and what they had achieved together.

His final full-time role brought his professional experience full circle. As Chief Operating Officer for the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), Peter worked to support one of the country’s leading voices in public policy and sustainable economic growth. It was a role that united his love of business, his belief in thoughtful leadership, and his commitment to contributing to the broader community.

Beyond his professional life, Peter and his wife, Prue, have been married for more than fifty years, sharing a warm and enduring partnership. Together they have two wonderful children — a daughter and a son — and two delightful grandsons, who are a constant source of joy and pride. Peter also enjoys life’s quieter pleasures: spending time with family and dogs, playing golf and sailing on weekends, and exploring new places through travel and reading.

Looking back, Peter sees his career not just as a series of roles or achievements, but as a journey shaped by people, opportunities, and the values he holds dear. His path — from his early days in Brighton to leading international operations and contributing to national economic development — reflects a belief that life’s best rewards come from curiosity, integrity, and staying engaged with what truly matters.
